The Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association traces its origin back to the Global Chinese Students' Union founded in 1905 and the Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association established in 1919, with Li Denghui as its first president. It resumed its activities in 1984 and added the name "Shanghai Overseas Students Association" (English abbreviation: SORSA) in 2007. Entering the new era, the Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association takes "a talent pool for serving the country through studying abroad, a think tank for offering suggestions and a new force in non-governmental diplomacy" as its responsibility. It has developed the work brand "Haishang Liusheng" (Voices of Overseas Returnees in Shanghai), and held such brand activities as the Symposium on Chinese Scholars and Shanghai's Development in the 21st Century, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Camp, Overseas Returnees' Job Express, and Internship Program for Overseas Chinese and Overseas Chinese Youth Students. It has also set up the Shanghai Overseas Students' Home and Research Center, conducted innovative work on SORSA think tank initiatives and non-governmental diplomacy projects, thereby ushering in a new phase in the robust development of Shanghai's overseas students' undertakings.
