近来，“踔厉奋发”一说在各大媒体的显现度相当高，党的二十大召开前后尤其如此，社会公众也乐于频繁引用。它的语法结构实为四个具有独立涵义的汉字组成，是联合式成语，可用作谓语或定语，形容精神振作，意气奋发。当下常见的用法为“踔厉奋发，勇毅前行”或者“踔厉奋发，笃行不怠”等。近义词是踔厉风发、踔厉骏发，不可误写成“踔力奋发”。

此语源自唐代韩愈《柳子厚墓志铭》：“议论证据今古，出入经史百子，踔厉风发，率常屈其座人。”这儿的“踔厉风发”形容谈论时神采飞扬，滔滔不绝的样子。率：大抵，通常。整句的意思是发表议论时能引证今古事例为依据，精通经史诸子典籍，才华横溢，滔滔不绝，常常使在座的人折服。

此成语也曾见于孙中山《中国革命史·革命之运动》：“其慷慨助饷，多为华侨;热心宣传，多为学界;冲锋破敌，则在军队与会党，踔厉奋发，各尽所能，有此成功。”

如果分开翻译，踔厉——To be sharp;奋发——Work hard;此成语本义可译成summon up one’s courage for a task或者be full of vim and vigour for a mission。

笔者注意到，各大英语媒体在切换这一结构和涵义均较为复杂的中国古成语时，呈现出多样的译法和译语。

2022年10月16日习近平总书记代表第十九届中央委员会向党的二十大作报告，阐述大会的主题为：

大会的主题是：高举中国特色社会主义伟大旗帜，全面贯彻新时代中国特色社会主义思想，弘扬伟大建党精神，自信自强、守正创新，踔厉奋发、勇毅前行，为全面建设社会主义现代化国家、全面推进中华民族伟大复兴而团结奋斗。

(The theme of this Congress is holding high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, fully implementing the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, carrying forward the great founding spirit of the Party, staying confident and building strength, upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground, forging ahead with enterprise and fortitude, and striving in unity to build a modern socialist country in all respects and advance the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts. )

此处的“踔厉奋发”与“勇毅前行”在切换成英语时，紧密相连，融合成一个现在分词短语：forging ahead with enterprise and fortitude，而with enterprise and fortitude义为“赋予进取心和毅力”，传递了“踔厉奋发”的意思。

2021年12月31日晚国家主席习近平发表二〇二二年新年贺词(新华网双语版)，其中说到：

我们唯有踔厉奋发、笃行不怠，方能不负历史、不负时代、不负人民。

(Only through vigorous and determined endeavor can we fulfill our responsibility to history, prove worthy of our times and live up to people’s expectations.)

through vigorous and determined endeavor(通过积极而坚定的努力)这一英语表述把“踔厉奋发”的含义与“笃行不怠”紧密相连，予以简约转译。新华社、中国日报、南华早报都是这样翻译的。

笔者也见到中国国际电视台、美国联合通讯社的译例，即an unceasing endeavor (持续不断的努力)，这与determined endeavor大同小异。

2022年9月27日中国日报报道：

中共中央总书记、国家主席、中央军委主席习近平27日前往北京展览馆，参观“奋进新时代”主题成就展。他强调，要踔厉奋发、勇毅前行、团结奋斗，夺取中国特色社会主义新胜利。

(Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday stressed concerted efforts to forge ahead determinedly toward a new victory of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks when visiting the exhibition – “Forging Ahead in the New Era” — at the Beijing Exhibition Hall in Beijing.)

2022年7月15日央视网报道习近平在新疆考察时强调，完整准确贯彻新时代党的治疆方略，建设团结和谐繁荣富裕文明进步安居乐业生态良好的美好新疆。他说：

……56个民族拧成一股绳，保持定力、脚踏实地，同心协力、踔厉奋发，在党的领导下为实现第二个百年奋斗目标继续奋斗。

(…unity in China with all 56 ethnic groups standing together, maintaining firm resolve, making pragmatic and concerted efforts for achieving the Second Centenary Goal under the Party’s leadership.)

上述两例中的concerted 义为“商定的，预定的，协调一致的，合拍的”，concerted efforts便把“踔厉奋发”的当代意义鲜明地表达出来，而making pragmatic and concerted efforts则把“脚踏实地，同心协力、踔厉奋发”这几层意思得体地糅合在一起了。

2022年5月10日央视网发布习近平在庆祝中国共产主义青年团成立100周年大会上的讲话。其中讲到：

中国特色社会主义新时代，共青团积极投身伟大斗争、伟大工程、伟大事业、伟大梦想波澜壮阔的实践，坚持守正创新，踔厉奋发，全面深化自身改革。

(In the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the Communist Youth League has pursued a great struggle, a great project, a great cause, and a great dream, made innovation on the basis of what has worked in the past, advanced its work with full strength, and reformed itself comprehensively.)

此处出现了“守正创新，踔厉奋发”的并列使用，以advanced its work with full strength(全力以赴推进工作)的译语表述“踔厉奋发”也不失为较好的选项，可圈可点。

此外，笔者碰巧看到了更为通俗易懂的译法，即work harder。例如：

2022年9月13日央视新闻报道了习近平在哈萨克斯坦媒体发表署名文章，其中有一句话：

中哈关系历经风雨考验和岁月积淀，早已坚韧如磐。我们要珍惜这来之不易的成果，踔厉奋发，不断将两国友好事业传承和发扬下去。

(Having stood the test of the changing circumstances and the passage of time, China-Kazakhstan relations have long become rock-solid. We should cherish this hard-won achievement, and work harder to carry on the cause of friendship between our two countries.)
